In this session, I am going to show you how to make a simple box out of a square of paper. This is red on one side and yellow on the other. The first thing we do, I want to make a red box, I think, so I have the red on the outside.
Fold the paper in half, like so. With this model, what we want to do is to find, to divide it into thirds. I’ll show you a simple way to do that You can do it exactly by folding, but this method is just as good, just as accurate.
The way you do it is, you first of all guess what a third might be. You guess what a third might be by folding the paper over on itself and you’ll notice that I’ve got two thirds of the paper on this side and a third of the paper on this side. And all I have to do is divide that in half so it’s half red and half yellow is my first guess.
I make a little pinch, just there, open the model up. What I then do is take the other edge, the other point, and fold it over to where that pinch line is and make another pinch. Now I’ve got two pinches, approximately a third and two-thirds the way through the paper.
But if I take this edge again, and fold it to that pinch mark, I made just now, and make another little pinch, it’s been mathematically proven that if you repeat this process over and over again, eventually the paper will be exactly a third, a third, a third divided. So that’s a simple way to divide a piece of paper into thirds. It also works for fifths, sevenths, and any other odd number you can think of.
So, we fold our paper into thirds. That’s one third. Because I’m pretty good at guessing this I didn’t have to do too many iterations of that process.
You do get better as you practice, as well. We have our paper divided up into thirds. We want to do the same thing going the other way.
I will show you the process again; guess what a third might be. Fold over to that third marker. Fold again and again I’ve got it exactly right, so no need to repeat the process.
For your own enjoyment, why don’t you guess very badly and see how the process iterates to divide the paper into thirds. So now we’ve got our paper divided up into thirds, what I want to do now is fold the raw edges to the third creases that we just made. What else I need to do is to fold the paper diagonally, for the crease; I don’t want to extend into this center square.
We crease diagonally from the corner to where that center square starts. Same here. And the same for the other diagonal.
Now what we want to do is to fold those pieces we just made, inside. This goes inside, same with this one. That one.
What we’ll do then is we’ll simply fold the whole thing over on itself, tucking that paper inside as neatly as we can, and now we’ve got your box.
